Training Footage – Progressing A Technical Session

Generally as part of the goalkeepers daily training programme, time is allocated to develop and support the technical elements of the goalkeepers play. These sessions which have followed a 10/15 minute ‘activation’ session indoors,  would proceed the managers requirements of the goalkeepers within the outfield players’ technical/tactical session.

In preparation when devising practices i not only base my thoughts on the individual technical/tactical development needs of the goalkeepers, but also to that of predicted/expected outcomes they will face when joining in to the outfield group. This is achieved prior by having a detailed discussion with the manager & other coaching staff.

The clipped video below involving the Swansea City senior goalkeepers  breaks down a 45 minutes technical practice supporting positive footwork, angled shots from various short distances and includes a passing and a crossing element. From an initial 10 minute handling and footwork practice the goalkeepers increase the tempo of their work rate while engaging in the first diving saves (10 minutes). They later progressed into more pressureised situations where decision making on the correct positioning, saving & catching technique became apparent. (20/25 minutes)

The aim of including these specific elements was to set them in good stead for some small sided, small area, practices where shots (many from angles) would be regular. The goalkeepers would also be expected to support players in possession with many passing opportunities and maybe (but not often) receive various cut backs and the odd deeper crossed ball.
